![]() ![]() Scientists have told CNN the heat wave is a clear sign of the climate crisis and that similar extreme heat events will happen more frequently in the future. "We saw heat records over the weekend only to be broken again the next day," Dahl told CNN, "particularly for a part of the country where this type of heat does not happen very often." About 800 people died across the Pacific Northwest during the heat wave, a number that will probably still go up as officials examine medical records and statistics in the coming weeks and months. In fact, researchers say the Pacific Northwest heat wave is roughly a once-in-10,000-years type of event. Kristina Dahl, a senior climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the heat wave is "unprecedented." A team from UCLA says climate change may be influencing how hot temperatures get each summer, but record-breaking events like the heat wave of 2021 are not so extreme that they can’t be predicted by climate change simulations. The heat has also been deadly, with many sudden deaths suspected of being linked to the extreme weather, and hundreds of people in the region have visited emergency departments or urgent-care clinics since Friday. Across the border, Lytton, British Columbia, registered 117.5 degrees on Monday - the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada and around 48 degrees above what's normal for this time of year. Seattle hit 108 degrees, besting the all-time record it set just a day earlier. We queried ICF’s climate analytics platform, which includes 32 downscaled GCMs, to determine whether temperatures like those we saw in late June would be anomalous under future climate conditions. Portland, Oregon, set an all-time, record-high temperature three days in a row, topping out at 116 degrees on Monday. Projections drawn from GCMs provide insights into how the Pacific Northwest heat event might look in a changing climate. A record-breaking heat wave is searing the Pacific Northwest, making life miserable for many. The week of July 24 marked the most severe heat wave the Pacific Northwest has experienced since the deadly 2021 heat wave broke all-time records across the region. ![]()
